More on the "When Helping Hurts"
Self/Group-study Course

Questions/Assignments
The questions challenge you to reflect on the readings and apply them to your ministry/community context. These questions are vital to maximizing your learning in the course.

As you answer the questions, it will be helpful to have a target group of people in mind.  This should be a group of people in a community you serve or want to serve.  Having people and faces in mind will help the learning become more alive, relevant, and beneficial, and it provides a basis for a ministry plan.  This process will help the course to be more than an academic exercise.

Group Study
For groups utilizing this material, there are group discussion questions with most lessons. These questions are intended to facilitate exchange among group members. Even though the questions are for group discussion, each individual should prepare for the group discussion by reading all the required reading and answering the questions in the written assignment.

Language
The course material is in English and requires a secondary-school level of English comprehension and writing skills.

Time Investment
While this self-study course is designed to be completed in four weeks, it can be extended according to the needs of the individual or group. For individual study, the time investment greatly varies and depends upon the dept to which you want to go (for example, if you utilize the recommended readings).

Course Material
This course material uses the "When Helping Hurts" book as the primary text. In addition, the course uses web-deployed course material consisting of readings and written assignments, both accessed via downloadable documents and web links.

Technology Requirements
The following computer software may be required to access the course material:

  • Microsoft Word (version 6.0/95 or later).  WordPad may work if necessary.

  • A web browser/html reader such as Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Internet Explorer (to read files in html format).

Certification
The Chalmers Center does not provide professional certification or academic credit for the course.

Further Chalmers Center Training
This course is a prerequisite for several other courses offered by the Chalmers Center. If you would like to take any of those other courses, you will need to show proof of completing this initial course. To do that, you must record your answers to select questions listed for each week and submit them to the Chalmers Center for review. The course syllabus will provide the details on how to submit your answers for review.

The Chalmers Center will review your answers within six weeks of receiving them.  For all acceptable and approved answers, we will issue a course completion certificate. There is a $20 (USD) charge for submitting your answers for review. Note that that the certification is not a professional certification.

When Helping Hurts has a large number of pre- and post-chapter questions. As part of the fulfillment of the prerequisite, the expectation is that you will respond to all of these questions. Although you will not submit your responses to all of these questions, responding to all of the questions will enhance your overall learning experience in the course.
