Why Chalmers Center Training?

The Chalmers Center advocates economic development ministry. It is important that churches, ministries, and missionaries have training before embarking on any economic development:

  1. Economic development can do great good if done well, but it can also do great harm if done poorly. The “...love of money is the root of all evil” biblical warning must be taken seriously.
  2. Economic development within communities is not always easy to implement and maintain. It requires some orientation and training in order to avoid doing unintentional harm to people and to the church or ministry.
  3. It is important for the church, ministry, or missionary to first understand the need of their target community before they can design the appropriate strategies and design the program for implementation.
  4. Churches, ministries, or missionaries must understand the basics of economic development to be able to “count the cost” prior to starting an economic development initiative.

About the Chalmers Center Training
The Chalmers Center provides training to churches on economic development strategies that address poverty alleviation. The training is contextualized to the ministry geography:

  1. Training for Ministry in Africa, Asia, and Latin America — For ministering to the poor in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, the Chalmers Centers provides training in Christian microfinance and microenterprise development through its International Ministry Track.

This training covers topics such as: promoting church-centered savings and credit associations, partnering with large-scale microfinance institutions, or training low-income people in business, home, and health.

  2. Training for Ministry US and Canada — For ministering to the poor in the US and Canada, the Chalmers Center's US/Canada Ministry Track provides an orientation on ministering to the poor in the areas of savings and asset accumulation, financial literacy, and job preparedness training.

In addition, the Chalmers Center provides assistance to churches and small-scale ministries who want to minister to the poor through Individual Development Accounts (IDA) Initiative, a program of matched income accounts that allow economically poor households to build an asset base.
